I used NetBeans until about three months ago when I finally switched to PHPStorm. The same features, options, UI, theme, and quirks were all present in both. In fact, at my workplace, I use IntelliJ for PHP development, while the colleague sitting next to me uses PhpStorm – it's 100% identical. If you don't mind paying a bit extra, IntelliJ supports not only PHP but also JavaScript. Does IntelliJ support PHP/JavaScript as well as PHPStorm/Webstorm? If you only need Ruby and Python support, you could buy RubyMine and PyCharm, or simply purchase IntelliJ – the result is identical, except that the former option would leave you with two installations. The editor locked to work exclusively with the Ruby plugin is called RubyMine, while the one restricted to the Python plugin is known as PyCharm, and the PHP-locked editor is PhpStorm, and so on. ![]() It's essential to note that it's the same editor and plugins regardless of the choice. If you simply want a single language, they offer versions locked to a specific plugin. Alternatively, if you prefer to install whichever language plugins you desire, buy IntelliJ – it comes with a Java plugin by default, but you can also install PHP, Python, Go, Ruby, and other language plugins. Essentially, JetBrains creates a single editor and offers various language plugins for it.
